“Koreans are warm and kind people. That impressed me a lot,” Suzy Vogler(Korean name, Choi Sung-Jin) said with smile. Vogler said this is her third time visit in Korea. She came to Seoul to see PyeongChang Winter Olympic. As a philanthropist, her desire is to connect between Korea and the U.S., and here is her life story.

Working as a philanthropist in the U.S.
Vogler has strived to diverse philanthropic works for her life with her siblings through a family charity foundation. Giving help for many education facilities and activists of environment protection are among them. She also provided female shelters in Illinois for women who suffer from abuses in society and family. They also provide vocational training for rehabilitation. Through her family foundation, she helps many people’s dream for a hopeful future and provides a better life.

As a part of her life-time charitable work, Vogler wants to build a better society and help people in need here in Korea through her contribution. "Every day I count my happiness, things that I have received. And I realize how happy I am." Living in three different states, Florida, San Francisco, and New York, there is no doubt that she has a fortunate life.

Her friendship with attorney  Park Tae-Sok
Vogler is a board member trustee in a reputable boarding school ‘Suffield Academy’in Connecticut. She got to know Park as a parent of its student. Park works for Law Firm ‘World’ in Seoul as a representativelawyer, after he had been a public prosecutor for 20 years. He also volunteered in various activities to help North Koreans, foreign workers, refugees, and Korean adoptees. Vogler was adopted into an American family at age three. With the help of Park, Vogler is opened to search for her birth parents.

‘Brodie Hall’dedicated to her adopted parents
"As a child, I always cherish Christmas when whole family would gather together to enjoy Holiday. My relatives lived near my home. We spent pleasant family time together. It is still vivid to me." said Vogler. Donald H. Brodie who adopted her was a businessman. His family company manufactured electronic components. He already had a son and two daughters at that time, but they welcomed a Korean child as their family, and Vogler made their lives much happier. "My parents always encouraged me to pursue whatever with passion I wanted," she said. With her parents’ dedicated assistance, she has been able to develop her talent.

For her years of contribution to the academy, Suffield Academy named the newest dormitory after her. She wanted to express her love for her adopted family by naming after family name, Brodie. Vogler went on to Art Collegein San Francisco, and met her husband, Bill. For 30 years, she has lived with her husband and her son, Brodie.

Vogler visited Choong Hyun Babies’ Home, an orphanage in Gwangju where she was raised before her adoption. She found out her Korean name, ‘Choi Sung-Jin,’ and her real birth date. She donated 15,000 US dollar to CHB as token of her gratitudefor taking care of her childhood. Social Welfare Council in Gwangju presented her an award of appreciation.

To Korea, and to my birth Mother
Vogler certainly understands why her birth mother would give her up during that time. She even feels compassion for her mother who had to abandon her. She would be honored to meet her and introduce her to her family.

"Ever since watching the Seoul Olympics in 1988, I always hoped that I would come back to my birth place. I am so excited to come to Korea and to attend the winter Olympics after all these years." Her bright smile shown during the interview seems contagious to everyone. She hopes that adoption culture for children in need would be spread. And she also wishes that the children also deserve happy lives like she has received.
We expect her message of hope to be responded.
